For the 12,000 fans it was a perfect day for Blood Bowl on the open fields of the Ostermark. The Sou’King Sunbaskers won the toss and chose to receive, with nimble footwork ensuring the chameleon skinks got under the ball. A gust of wind blew the ball off-course in a sign of things to come for the visitors.
The Saurus line of scrimmage made quick work of the humans as the Lizards collected the ball and started moving forward and pushing players down their left side. The Cockerell’s shifted to the opposite side to surf a Saurus into the crowd leading to chants of “Dinosaur, Dinosaur - we eat them in our hotdogs” from the Cockerell faithful. It would be the last Saurus to be KO’d - despite the efforts of nine players on a lone Saurus later.
As the Sunbaskers moved the ball forward, the humans went after the softer targets and knocked out and badly injured two skinks. Ignoring his colleague’s experience of human fists, the Skink ball-carrier rushed forward with a Saurus blocker for company, only to be tackled by a Cockerell and the ball to be thrown the opposite way into the hands of Richarlison (#10) and out of Lizard reach. A chameleon skink desperately tried to tackle the human ball carrier but only managed a push toward the end-zone leading to a first touchdown. The home crowd goes wild. Richarlison (#10) with his first of the match and second of his career.
[Editor: At this point the game was paused as POG closed and we sojourned to Fortress]
11 players set up for both teams (2 lizards and 1 human player out with injuries) as the first half kicked on, with some brilliant coaching from the Sunbaskers. The Sauruses quickly formed a four-corner cage and began to move down their left flank towards the end zone. The Cockerells surround the cage, five players in front, three on the side and one behind. There is carnage, blocking, dodging and eventually the ball carrier is abandoned by the Sauruses who go feral. The first half ends 1-0, but there are goals in the air. Or is that blood?
The second sees more brilliant coaching by the Sunbaskers and the kick goes short on the left side for the offense, with the humans screening their #1 thrower and ball carrier. Despite a lot of blocks, and what has since been described as the worst cage ever - or as the coach termed it: “a loose pentagram” - the ball is worked down the middle, handed to Johnson (#15) who rushes the ball for an early 2-0 in the second half. There is a lot of Blood Bowl yet to play!
More brilliant coaching from the Sunbaskers, and if it doesn’t give a TD it is going to cost someone roars the coach. The players are running their hearts out (so many rushes!) The Saurus blockers knocks over all but three of the Human players as splinters of armour and human teeth are everywhere, with two niggling injuries later confirmed by the apothecary. The crowd are loving every bone-crunching minute of it. The ball-carrying skink, Artemis (#2) is a lonely figure as he sprints up the right flank. Artemis dodges one player, is blitzed by a linesman - loses the ball - picks it back up again only to be blitzed again. Holds on to it, but is surrounded deep in OC territory. Watching the clock, the Sunbasker coach urges Artemis to dodge out and he does. There is hope. 2-1.
Third kick off this half and the referee has decided to take charge with some officious behaviour knocking down a player on both teams. The Lizards kick the ball tso short that the the Cockerell line of scrimmage tries to catch. They fail and the ball lands just behind them as the ref knocks out the Saurus covering the offensive left flank. Spotting an opportunity Vicario (#1) runs for the ball, collects it in Quarterback style and throws it left. Johnson (#15) catches it, and runs it up the pitch while his colleagues screen for him. The skinks catch up in the last minutes of the half, but it’s a feint! Johnson moves right, picks out Richarlison (#10) who scored the first TD and hands him the ball. Richardson is free to break from the screen and rushes into the endzone. 3-1.
There’s still a few minutes of added time, which the Sunabskers use to pummel the Cockerell line of scrimmage while the rest of the team celebrate/laugh in their own end zone. For the third time that day the Lizards go down with their blocking (double skulls again again), and it’s all over. 3-1 on the fields of Ostermark, with lots of work for the medics. |
